Research shows benefits of cranberries
Cranberries are among the top foods with proven health benefits, according to Amy Howell,a researcher at Rutgers University.
Cranberries are full of antioxidants, which protects cells from damage by unstable molecules called free radicals.
The National Institutes of Health is funding research on the cranberry's effects on heart disease, yeast infections and other conditions, and other researchers are investigating its potential against cancer, stroke and viral infections.
So far,research has found:
* Drinking cranberry juice can block urinary infections by binding to bacteria so they can't adhere to cell walls. While women often drink unsweetened cranberry juice to treat an infection, there's no hard evidence that works.
* A compound Howell discovered in cranberries, proanthocyanidine, prevents plaque formation on teeth; mouthwashes containing it are being developed to prevent periodontal disease.
* In some people, regular cranberry juice consumption for months can kill the H.pylori bacteria, which can cause stomach cancer and ulcers.
Preliminary research also shows:
* Drinking cranberry juice daily may increase levels of HDL,or good cholesterol and reduce levels of LDL,or bad cholesterol.
* Cranberries may prevent tumors from growing rapidly or starting in the first place.
* Extracts of chemicals in cranberries prevent breast cancer cells from multiplying in a test tube; whether that would work in women is unknown.
Smile,you're in happiness class
"Close your eyes and think about your breathing," says Ian Morris,a religious education teacher,as he weaves between the desks."In and out, through your nostrils. That tells your brain that you're relaxed.Think about the oxygen coming in,and the toxins your body is letting out."
That last line produces a snigger from a curly-haired lad at the front of the class. But most of the pupils are busy inhaling and exhaling. With their eyes obediently shut, they look much younger than the self-consciously cool teenagers who were joshing each other two minutes earlier.
Wellington is the first school in Britain to teach happiness classes.Or "wellbeing",as its new Master,Dr Anthony Seldon, prefers the course to be known. But everyone talks of "happiness classes",and there is nothing he can do to stop them.
Happiness, that most elusive of experiences, has become the must-have accessory of the decade. The shelves of Waterstone's and Borders heave with books on the subject:Stumbling on Happiness,The Secrets of Happiness,The Art of Happiness,Authentic Happiness,The Promise of Happiness,The Happiness Hypothesis,Eight Steps to Happiness… it's as if psychologists have only just discovered the concept.

Most authoritative of all is Happiness by Richard Layard,a former professor of economics at the LSE who has joined the select ranks of
Old Etonians on the Labour benches in the House of Lords.Cynics talk about "the happiness industry"; he subtitles his book "Lessons from a New Science".One of his students is the Prime Minister.
In his unofficial role as Tony Blair's "happiness tsar",Lord Layard has been pressing the Government to set up NHS treatment centres where depressed and anxious people can receive cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT),which addresses psychological problems by teaching people new ways of thinking. He is also associated with Cambridge University's new Well-being Institute,a multidisciplinary research body launched today.
